The Human Genome Project(HGP), which is an international effort to map and sequence the human genome, is evaluated critically in terms of its aim, its scientific merit, its efficiency as a research program, and its ethical implications HGP is the culmination of a research program within biology that has been fundamentally reductionist. Because the value of HGP is limited within the bound of the authenticity of the biological reductionism, the biological reductionism is also considered critically. The biological reductionism is a scarce paradigm for biology in four points of view. First, there are plenty of biological phenomena that cannot be explained in terms of molecules only. Second, because biological systems have hierarchically organized structures in which bidirectional flows of informations occur, the genetically-deterministic concept cannot be valid. Third, the biological reductionism vitiate the christian view of Creation and Man. Fourth, the biological reductionism may mislead the direction of the development of the genetic engineering in the context of evolutionism. In conclusion, HGP can have its meaning only within the availability of the functional and/or the teleological explanations of biological phenomena. |
