맥도날드화는 막스 베버의 합리적 관료제라는 이론을 현대 기술문명과 소비주의를 바탕으로 한 패스트푸드점의 원리를 따라 새롭게 적용한 사회 분석 틀이다. 조지 리처는 맥도날드가 형식적 합리성을 발전시켜주는 4가지 원리인 효율성, 계산가능성, 예측가능성, 통제 등을 통해 서구 사회를 비롯한 전 세계인들의 삶을 지배하고 있다고 주장한다. 이를 가장 대표적인 패스트푸드 매장인 맥도날드의 이름과 운영원리를 빌려온 것이다. 맥도날드화는 더 나아가 실체적 내용과 의미가 없는 세계화로 발전되고 있으며, 이러한 맥도날드화의 흐름은 교회와 그리스도인의 삶에도 예외 없이 침투해있다. 특히 교회의 사역과 삶에 대한 진단은 맥도날드화의 원리에 의해서 상당히 신선한 비평의 대상이 될 수 있다. 그러나 맥도날드화는 단순히 현상과 실천에 국한될 뿐 아니라, 세계관과 관점의 문제이기도 하다. 맥도날드화의 배경이 되는 신념들은 기독교 세계관에 의해서 다시 조명되고 비판되어야 맥도날드화된 삶의 양식을 넘어서는 기독교적 제자도와 실천이 가능해진다. 기독교 세계관을 통한 맥도날드화에 대한 비평은 단순히 그리스도인 개인의 삶 뿐 아니라, 교회 공동체의 삶과 사역 모델에도 창의적이고, 인격적이며, 다양성에 기초한 변화를 요구하게 된다. |

McDonaldization is in the wake of Max Weber''s bureaucratic rationality that was foundational to the pasthology of the west as Weber diagnosed. Goerge Ritzer coined the term ‘McDonaldization’ to describe the prevalence of formal rationalism around the world. In fact, McDonaldization is a symbolic representation of fastfood restaurants, of which working principles reflect the modern version of bureaucratic rationality. Four characteristics of McDonaldization are efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control. These four traits permeate the life of the church and Christians as well as dominate secular world. In particular, church leaders'' obsession with pre-packaged program for the church ministry and the numerical growth will be likely to follow the path of McDonaldization, whether they are aware of it or not. In a response to McDonaldization, this article attempts to present the Christian theistic worldview by explicating its open system, creativity of human beings in the mage of God, harmonic peace of the created world, and the relational vision of Incarnation. Establishing the biblical worldview in the mind and life of Christians will serve as basis on which we live running counter to the world of McDonaldization. Likewise, the church community is also called to overcome the pattern of McDonaldization in its concrete ministry models of worship, sermon, education, and evangelism and instead be faithful to the grace and providence of God who is the infinite Creator. |
