본 연구는 한국에서 일생을 마친 개화기 선교사 애니 베어드의 선교문학을 대상으로 삼았다. 그녀는 남편 윌리엄 베어드와 함께 한국 선교에 일생을 바친 인물로서, 초창기 부산 및 대구 지역 선교에 지대한 공헌을 했다. 또한 평양으로 선교지를 옮긴 이후 한국 최초의 대학인 숭실대학을 설립함으로써 한국 근대 교육의 확립에도 기여도가 매우 높다. 본 연구자는 이처럼 초창기 한국 선교사의 주요 인물인 애니 베어드의 또 다른 업적에 관심을 두었는데, 이는 그녀가 남긴 국문소설 [고영규젼]과 [부부의 모본]이 지닌 개화기 문학적 의미를 규명함이다. 이를 위해 작품에 드러난 한국 문화에 대한 비판적 인식을 분석했으며, 이를 개화기 계몽의식의 측면에서 해석을 시도했다. 두 작품은 당대 봉건적 한국 사회가 안고 있는 부조리와 병폐를 적나라하게 고발하고, 나아가 기독교 윤리 의식을 통해 새로운 미래상을 제시하고 있다는 점에서 당대 개화기 계몽소설들과 동일성을 갖는다. 아울러 이 두 작품을 소설 장르로 규정할 수 있는 근거를 텍스트의 구성요소들에서 찾고자 했으며, 동시대 다른 선교문학과 비교함으로써 그 문학적 성과를 평가했다. 결론적으로 애니 베어드는 이방인 선교사임에도 불구하고 뛰어난 한국어 실력을 보여주고 있다는 사실에서 놀랍고, 더 나아가 당대 조선사회가 안고 있던 부조리를 전통적 소설양식의 친숙성과 근대문학 이행기에 나타난 과도기적 속성들을 적절히 구사하여 비판하고 있다는 점에서 더욱 놀랍다. 특히 작품 속에 두드러진 선교문학적 계몽성은 당대 개화기 소설들이 공유하고 있던 근대적 계몽의식과 동일성을 갖고 있으며, 그의 소설에 형상화된 서사적 특성들이 당대 서사문학과 양식적 흐름을 같이한다는 사실에서 개화기 소설로서의 연구 가치를 지니게 된다. 이러한 특징들 이 애니 베어드의 소설을 한국 문학사의 범주에서 다루어야 할 이유로 작용할 것이며, 아울러 그 결과로 인해 개화기 문학사의 지평 확대가 꾀해질 수 있을 것이다. |

This study is about the missionary literature of Annie Baird, a missionary in the time of enlightenment who completed her life in Korea. She devoted her life to the missionary work in Korea with her husband, William Baird, and made a major contribution to the missionary work in Busan and Daegu region at the initial stage. She also highly contributed to the establishment of the modern education with the establishment of Soongsil University, Korea’s first University, after she moved the mission field to Pyongyang. This study focuses on another achievement of Annie Baird, the major figure in the early stage of Korean missionary history, and is to clarify the literary meaning of her Korean novels, Goyeonggyu-jyeon and Bubueui-mobon, in the time of enlightenment. The critical awareness about Korean culture revealed in her novel is analyzed and interpreted in the terms of the enlightened consciousness in the time of enlightenment. These two works have equality to the contemporary enlightening novels in the time of enlightenment at the points that they frankly accuse the injustice and stigma of the feudal Korean society at that time and furthermore present the new vision of future through Christian ethics. In addition, this study tries to find the basis to define these two works as novel in the components of text, and evaluate the literary achievement by comparing them with other contemporary missionary literature. In conclusion, it is surprising that she used fluent Korean skills though she was a foreign missionary, and the significance of literary history in the time of enlightenment can be given to her works because she freely expressed orean sentiment by having a command of our traditional prose form appropriately. |
