The `New History,` based on either economic-demographic determination or economic class determination, has become old. Dramatic changes have taken place in historiography: in the understanding of human beings, from an emphasis on the structure surrounding them to that on the human beings themselves; in the subject matter, from economics and demographics to anthropology and psychology; and in method, from the analytical to the narrative. Yet Christians should not be to hasty to rejoice, since these trends have been influenced by the relativism which stems from Postmodernism. The new universe discovered by the `New Historians` is an arena of chaos. Christian historians need a new normative standard for writting history: perspectivism, not relativism. |
