One of the most serious problems in Korean economy is that the ideology of material prosperity has been extended during the period of rapid growth since 1960s and is now dominating almost the whole society. Thus in pursuing the economic reform, we should abandon that ideology, and need to create a new framework of the economy which is based on the idea of stewardship. Although Christians are responsible for these, many Korean Christians do not take it upon themselves to do so. Hence prior to the economic reform for the nation, the churches must be reformed first. Perhaps the church reform which the people of God spontaneously perform will follow such an order as follows. They should first of all perceive that the excessive pursuit of material prosperity is an idolatry, and then repent that they have worshiped such an idol, and finally recover `Koinonia` within the churches. The economic reform that follows this church reform should involve not only removing many kinds of economic injustices, but also abolishing the economic structure that has supported the ideology of material prosperity. In the light of these requirements, the measures taken by Korean government for the economic reform are unsatisfactory. Particularly, recent economic policies are laying excessive stress on the international competitive power, which I think is generating a new form of material prosperity ideology. |
