Christian nationalism in colonial Korea is an unique case in the emergence among the conventional religious nationalisms observed throughout the world. The uniqueness is reflected in the following question: How was Christianity newly introduced to Korea deeply involved in nation-building during the colonial period? For uncovering the myth, a comparative anaysis on several cases of religious nationalisms was conducted, from which deriving three conditions of the emergence, such as identification between religion and the nation, relative autonomy of religion, and organizational vacuum in nation-building. Applying these conditions to the Korean case, importance of the political position of Christianity was found. First, intimate political relationship between Christianity and Western nations enabled Christianity to keep the relative autonomy from the colonial state, and it also facilitated a strong identification of the nation facing the cultural vacuum with Christianity. Second, a distant political relationship between Christianity and Japan became an important background for Christianity to be accepted as a new institutional arena for nation-building suffering from the organizational vacuum. Due to the uniqueness, for a better understanding of Christian nationalism in colonial Korea, it was suggested a new model including the colonial policy and the power balance between the missionary and the Korean in the Christian organization. |
