In this paper we analyze the social-ethical problems of the consumption-culture and explore the alternative `new lifestyle of christians and churches`. Since the end of the 1980s, Korean society has been characterized as a consumer-society. The shift over to a consumer-society brings to Korean society material richness, but causes many social-ethical problems such as mammonism, discord between the social-classes, environmental crises, etc. Today Consumer ism has a function as a pseudo religion, in which man finds the meaning of life in consumption. It functions as an Ideology in that point of view, the expansion of consumption is regarded as the highest Goal of social and political structures. Christian ethics must begin with disclosing and criticizing the ideological character of consumerism. Going a step forward christian ethics must explore a new christian lifestyle : diligence, frugality, rational and sound consumption, and the value of self-sufficiency, etc. But this individual-ethical viewpoint of a new lifestyle must be supplemented with a Consumer-Movement and many other social-political measures. |
