본 논문의 목적은 빈센트 반 고흐의 작품 속에 반영된 프로테스탄트 정신을 살펴보는데 있다. 반 고흐에 대한 연구는 많았지만 프로테스탄티즘 특별히 칼빈주의가 반 고흐의 작품에 끼친 영향에 대한 연구는 거의 없었다. 반 고흐는 네덜란드의 준데르트에서 개혁파 목사의 아들로 태어났다. 반 고흐는 종교적이었으며 성직자가 되기를 갈망했다. 그는 보리나주에 있는 한 탄광촌에서 수습선교사로 사역을 시작하였다. 하지만 목회자가 되고자 했던 반 고흐의 갈망은 이루어지지 않았다. 반 고흐는 그림에서 자신의 소명을 발견한다. “복음 속에 렘브란트가 있고 렘브란트 속에 복음이 있다.”는 말은 화가로서의 반 고흐와 성직자로서의 반 고흐의 소명을 잘 보여준다. 목사의 아들로 그리고 화상을 하는 숙부로부터 칼빈주의와 칼빈주의적 예술을 접할 수 있었다. 특별히 칼빈주의의 세속적 금욕주의와 노동을 신성시 하는 직업소명설은 자연스럽게 반 고흐로 하여금 일상적인 주제에 관심을 갖게 하였다. 반 고흐의 <감자 먹는 사람들>, <씨 뿌리는 사람>, <감자 심는 사람들>과 같은 작품들은 전통적인 기독교 도상학을 현대적 회화로 재해석한 것이었다. |

The thesis offers a fresh interpretation of the works of Vincent Willem van Gogh. Although there have been many studies on the works of van Gogh, relatively little attention has been given to the influence of Calvinistic tradition on the works of van Gogh. Van Gogh was born in Zundert, the Netherlands to a clerical family. His father was a Dutch Reformed pastor. He was deeply religious and aspired to be a pastor. He worked as a lay preacher in the Borinage mining region. The church committee fired him because he did not dress well and preach eloquently. Van Gogh finally found his calling as a painter. He says, “There is something of Rembrandt in the gospel or, if you prefer, something of gospel in Rembrandt.” It shows van Gogh's calling as a painter as well as a pastor. As a son of Dutch Reformed pastor, van Gogh was naturally influenced by the Calvinistic tradition. It was Calvinism, which emphasizes the vocational calling in secular areas and worldly asceticism that caused his interest in the peasant class. Paintings such as <The Potato Eaters>, <The Sewer>, <Farmers Planting Potatoes> and similar artworks are examples of van Gogh's modern reinterpretation of traditional Christian iconology. |
