In the past time, only a few the Korean churches and theologians were interested in the subject of economic ethics. This has many causes: the development of the dictatorship and duration of the military regime, theological dualism of faith as a spiritual problem and economy as secular, and the deficient knowledge of the theologians in the social science like economics etc. The current crisis of the economy forces theologians, to analyze the problems of economy form the theological perspective and to suggest alternatives. In this paper, I stress the meaning and the importance of the christian faith in the formation of a sustainable economy. Economy is the area in which the lordship of Christ is realized, and the concern on the poor is the crucial missionary task of churches today. More important is the problem that the free market theory functions as a new ideology and a psuedo-religion. Thus, I present an analysis of the contents of the free market theory and a criticism of it`s fundamental values from the theological perspective. I also discuss the misunderstanding of the free market, \external effect` such as environmental problems, and the problem of the incomplete competition etc. In conclusion, I propose the ethical guideline for the formation of the sustainable economy. First, the `humane principle` of economy aims to understand human life as a goal, not a means of the economy. Second, the `democratic principle` of economy aims at a decentralization of economic power through the demoratization of the relations between labor and capital. Third, the `social principle` of economy aims at solidarity and equality between the rich and the poor. Fourth, the `ecological principle` of economy means a harmony between the environment and economy. Lastly, the `global justice principle` of economy means a realization of the global justice through reducing the gap between the developed states and underdeveloped. |
