배와 항해에 대한 메타포는 기독교의 역사에서 자주 사용되었다. 성서에 기록된 내용 뿐 아니라 예수의 사역과 제자들의 삶에서 배의 역할은 매우 중요하였다. 중세를 거치는 동안에도 배의 의미는 공동체적인 가치를 강요하는 수단으로 사용되었으며, 이는 건축물과 상징표현들에서도 등장하게 된다. 15세기를 전후로 등장하는 다양한 배에 관한 삽화들은 중세적 표현 전통을 계승함과 동시에 불안한 사회와 가톨릭에 대한 불안감을 내포하고 있다. 종교개혁이 진행되면서 이러한 표현은 더욱 적극적으로 등장하게 되는데, 루터파를 지지하는 작가들이 가톨릭을 비판하는 표현 중 하나로 ‘배/항해’이미지를 사용하였기 때문이다. 그러나 루터파를 둘러싼 정치적 지형과 종교적 상황이 변화하면서 기존의 메타포 사용도 변화하기 시작하였다. 슈말칼덴 동맹의 패배 이후, 종파 내 교리를 둘러싼 갈등은 루터파 지지자들에게 새로운 고민을 제공하였다. 따라서 가톨릭에 대한 비판과 함께 자신들의 교리나 가치를 강조하는 것이 중요하게 나타나게 된다. |
| 영문 초록 |
Metaphors of ships are frequently used in Christianity. In the Bible, ships are represented as major symbols and roles. Even in the Middle Ages, ships were used as a means of emphasizing communal values, which also appeared in buildings and symbolic expressions. In various illustrations appearing around the 15th century, the ship not only inherits the medieval expression tradition, but also contains anxiety about an unstable society and Catholicism. As the Reformation progressed, this expression appeared more actively, because writers who supported the Lutherans used ships as one of the expressions criticizing Catholicism. However, as the political landscape and religious situation surrounding Lutheran changed, the use of the metaphor for ships began to change. After the defeat of the Schmalkalden League, conflicts over doctrine within the sect provided new concerns for Lutheran supporters. Therefore, it is expressed as a more important task to emphasize their doctrine or values. |
