| 국문 초록 | 찰스 피니는 그의 부흥론을 전개함에 있어서 철저하게 방법론적이었다. 그는 부흥의 본질이 무엇인가를 묻지 않았다. 그는 부흥에 대해 교의학이나 교리신학적으로 논하지도 않았다. 오히려 피니의 부흥론은 철저하게 실용적이요, 실제적이요, 그리고 방법론적이었다. 그는 어떻게 하면 부흥을 일으킬 수 있는지에 대해서만 말한다. 그는 부흥이 정말 필요한 것인지, 또는 왜 필요한 것인지 등에 대해서는 전혀 논하지 않는다. 그는 우리에게 부흥이 필요한 것은 당연한 것이라는 전제로 시작한다. 그래서 그에게 문제는 어떻게 하면 부흥을 촉진시킬 수 있는가가 참 문제였다. 피니가 이러한 실용적이고 방법론적인 부흥론을 갖게 된 배경에는 그의 법률가로서의 경험이 크게 작용했다. 피니는 1818년에 법률에 입문을 했다. 그는 열정적으로 법학 서적을 탐독했다. 그리고 변호사가 되어 많은 의뢰인들의 소송을 맡아서 대리하면서 그는 철저하게 승소를 위한 방법론적인 사람으로 만들어져 갔다. 그는 어떻게 하면 소송에서 이길 수 있는지 그 승소의 방법만을 추구하며 살아가는 실용적인 사람이었다. 그러던 그가 부흥사로서의 새로운 삶을 살게 되었을 때, 그러한 법률가 시절의 방법론 추구 습관과 태도가 여전히 그의 부흥론에도 녹아있게 되어, 결국 방법론적 부흥론을 갖게 되었다. 그의 ‘법률가 정신(legal mind)’은 그의 부흥신학 속에서 다시 태어났던 것이다. |
| 영문 초록 | Charles G. Finney was thoroughly methodological in developing his theory of revival. He did not ask what the essence of revival was. He did not discuss the revival neither dogmatically nor theologically. Rather, Finney's theory of revival was thoroughly pragmatic, practical, and methodological. He only talks about how to bring about a revival. He never discusses whether or why a revival is really necessary. He begins with the premise that it is natural for us to need revival. So the real question for him was then, how to promote revival. Finney's experience as a lawyer played a major role in the development of this pragmatic and methodological revival theory. Finney entered law in 1818. He passionately read law books. And as a lawyer, he took charge of the lawsuits of many clients, and he was thoroughly made into a methodological person for winning. He was a pragmatic person who lived only by pursuing the method of winning the lawsuit. Then, when he started a new life as a revivalist, the habit and attitude of pursuing a method as a lawyer were still incorporated in his revival theory, eventually leading to a methodological revival theory. His ‘legal mind’ was reborn in his revival theology. |
