이 연구는 윤치호가 역술(譯述)한 「찬미가」(1908)를 통해 한국 근대 전환기 기독교 찬송가가 근대 국가 만들기라는 과제에서 수행하였던 역할에 대해 살펴보았다. 윤치호의 「찬미가」는 우리나라 찬송 가집 역사상 초창기에 간행된 찬송가집이다. 기독교 찬송가집 가운데 윤치호의 「찬미가」는 독특한 위치에 있다. 첫째, 곡이 15곡이 들어있는 소책자다. 같은 해에 장로교와 감리교가 연합하여 만든 찬송가집은 317곡을 수록하였다. 교회에서 사용하는 것보다는 교회 학교 교육용으로 제작된 것이다. 둘째, 개인이 만든 찬송가집이다. 개인이 1894년 언더우드가 만든 찬송가집을 제외하고 다른 찬송가집은 대개 교파 찬송가 위원회가 만들었다. 그만큼 윤치호가 영어와 국어학에 관한 지식이 있어 가능했다. 셋째, ‘애국가’가 포함되었다. 15곡 중에 3곡이 ‘애국가’이다. 당시 기독교는 민족주의와 긴밀 한 관련을 갖고 있었다. 그러한 경향은 선교사보다 한국인에게 더 강했다. 윤치호는 일제 말기에 일본 제국주의 편에 섰다. 그래서 몇몇 연구자들은 「찬미가」의 민족주의 성격을 부정한다. 하지만 윤치호의 말년 행적으로 그의 전 인생을 평가하는 것은 부당하다. 윤치호는 민족주의자 입장에서 「찬미가」를 저술하였다. 그리고 당시 독자들은 「찬미가」를 통해 기독교 신앙과 나라에 대한 충성을 함께 노래하였다. |

This study examines the role that Christian hymnody played in the task of creating a modern nation state during the transition period to modern era through Yoon Chi- ho's translation of Chanmiga(1908). Yun Chi-ho's Chanmiga was an early publication in the history of Korean hymnbooks. Among protestant hymnals, Yoon's Chanmiga is unique. First, it is a booklet with 15 songs. The hymnal produced by the Presbyterian and Methodist churches in the same year contained 317 songs. It was intended for use in a mission school rather than for church use. Second, there are privately produced hymnals. With the exception of Underwood's hymnal(1894), other hymnals were usually created by denominational hymnal committees, which Yun Chi-ho's knowledge of English and national language skills made possible. Third, "Korean national anthem" were included. Three of the 15 songs are anthems. At the time, Christianity was closely associated with nationalism. Yun Chi-ho sided with Japanese imperialism in the last days of the colonial period, so some researchers deny the nationalist character of Chanmiga. However, it would be unfair to judge his entire life by his later actions. Yun Chi Ho wrote Chanmiga from a nationalist position. And readers at that time sang together their Christian faith and loyalty to the country through Chanmiga. |
