이 글은 20세기 초반 한국의 대표적인 ‘국제적’ 인물이었던 윤치호의 국제인식을 살펴본다. 기존 연구는 주로 조선의 국내적 혼란 상황이라는 맥락에서 윤치호의 사상을 다뤘던 반면, 이 글은 국제주의(internationalism)운동이라는 역사적 맥락을 통해 그를 해석한다. 특히 세계교회주의 운동을 중심으로 한 기독교 국제주의와 윌슨주의에 기반한 민족자결주의 국제주의 관점에서 그의 행보를 조명하며, 1910년 에딘버러 세계선교대회를 전후한 윤치호의 심경 변화와 신앙관을 고찰한다. 이를 통해 그가 3.1운동을 “정치적 인플루엔자”라 부르며 친일적 행보를 선택하게 된 맥락을 새롭게 재구성한다. 윤치호에게 기독교 신앙은 단순히 ‘서구’라는 지역적 특성으로 설명될 수 없는, 내밀한 사적 경험과 다양한 외부적 경험이 중첩되어 형성된 다층적 감정과 관념을 내포했다. 이 글은 국제주의의 관점을 통해 그 복잡성과 독특성을 새롭게 조명하며, 궁극적으로 국제주의적 흐름의 주변부에 위치한 한 인물의 독특한 서사에 주목하며 국제주의에 대한 역사적 이해를 확장하고자 한다. |

This study explores the international ideas of Yun, Chi-ho, a prominent ‘international’ figure in early 20th-century Korea. While previous research has primarily focused on Yun’s ideology within the context of Joseon’s domestic turbulence, this paper seeks to shed new light on Yun’s unique complexities by framing his thoughts through the concept of internationalism. Yun’s perspectives are examined through the lenses of Christian internationalism, specifically centered on ecumenicalism and Wilsonian internationalism. In particular, this study reinterprets Yun’s intellectual transformation and Christian faith around the time of the 1910 Edinburgh World Missionary Conference. It also contextualizes Yun’s decision to refer to the March 1st Movement as a “political influenza” and to pursue a pro-Japanese path. Christian faith underpinned Yun’s international outlook, encompassing a multi-layered set of emotions and ideas shaped both by personal and external experiences. Ultimately, this study seeks to expand the historical understanding of internationalism by examining the narrative of a unique figure whose experiences were on the peripheries of major internationalist movements. |
