본 논문은 영문학 연구의 패러다임 전환을 중심으로 주디스 버틀러(Judith Butler)의 젠더 이론이 미친 영향을 비판적으로 고찰한다. 기존의 정전(canon) 중심 연구에서 후기구조주의, 탈식민주의, 페미니즘 비평 등의 비판적 이론이 등장하면서 문학 연구는 단순한 미학적 탐구를 넘어 사회적 권력 구조를 해체하는 방향으로 변화해 왔다. 버틀러의 ‘젠더 수행성(gender performativity)’ 개념은 이러한 흐름 속에서 기존 젠더 이분법을 해체하고, 성적 정체성을 사회적 수행의 결과로 이해하는 새로운 시각을 제시했다. 그러나 본 논문은 젠더 수행성이 생물학적 성(sex)의 중요성을 간과하고, 정체성의 유동성을 지나치게 강조함으로써 사회적 혼란을 초래할 가능성이 있음을 지적한다. 또한, 젠더 개념의 무한한 해체가 전통적 도덕성과 규범성을 약화시키고, 문학 연구가 이념적 도구로 활용되는 문제를 초래할 수 있음을 논의한다. 결론적으로, 본 연구는 버틀러의 젠더 이론이 문학 연구에 미친 공헌을 인정하면서도, 그 이론적 한계와 실제적 적용 가능성에 대한 신중한 검토가 필요하다는 점을 강조한다. 이를 통해 문학 연구가 미학적 깊이와 보편적 인간 경험을 탐구하는 학문으로서 균형을 유지해야 함을 제안한다. |

This study critically examines the paradigm shift in English literary studies, focusing on the influence of Judith Butler’s gender theory. Butler’s concept of gender performativity has significantly reshaped literary criticism, challenging traditional gender binaries and emphasizing the social construction of identity. This paper explores the theoretical foundations of gender performativity, its impact on literary canon revision, and its intersection with feminist and queer theory. While Butler’s work has contributed to expanding perspectives in literary studies, this study also highlights its theoretical limitations, particularly its neglect of biological sex and the instability it introduces to identity formation. Additionally, the paper critiques the broader sociocultural consequences of dismantling normative gender structures. Through a balanced analysis, this research aims to assess both the contributions and the challenges posed by Butler’s gender theory within literary studies, arguing for a nuanced approach that considers both social constructs and inherent human identity. |
