| 국문 초록 | 본 논문은 성화상 논쟁을 일으킨 신학적 배경이 무엇이며, 성화상 파괴론자와 성화상 옹호론자가 각각 어떤 논거를 통해 자신의 입장을 정당화하려고 했는지 밝히고자 한다. 일부 학자들은 성화상파괴 논쟁이 본래 기독교 교리 문제와 아무런 관련이 없이 순전히 정치적, 경제적 요인에 의해 생겨났다고 주장했다. 하지만 성화상 논쟁의 바탕에는 예수 그리스도의 본성이 무엇이며, 원상과 모상 사이에 어떤 관계가 성립하는가에 관한 신학적 갈등이 깔려 있었다. 우리는 성화상 파괴론자들과 성화상 옹호론자들이 이 문제에 관해 어떤 견해를 피력했는지 분석함으로써, 성화상 논쟁의 신학적 함의를 설명하고자 한다. 한편 우리는 원상/모상의 관계에 대한 논의가 신플라톤주의 미학에 의해 큰 영향을 받았음을 보일 것이다. 특히 다마스쿠스의 요안네스를 비롯한 성화상 옹호론자들은 플로티노스의 빛 이론을 받아들임으로써 성화상이 우리를 영적 세계로 이끄는 동시에 궁극적으로 하나님과 닮게 만들어 준다고 주장했다. 우리는 성화상 논쟁에 대한 재평가가 현대 정보화 사회에서 기독교 예술이 나아갈 방향에 대해 시사점을 제공해 준다고 생각한다. |
| 영문 초록 | This essay shows what the theological background of the iconoclasm was and how the Iconoclasts and the Iconophiles (or the Iconodoules) tried to justify their views. Some scholars contend that Byzantine iconoclasm has nothing to do with the Christian dogma and that it resulted purely from the political and economical factors. But in my opinion, deep inside the iconoclasm there was a theological conflict about the nature of Jesus Christ and the relation between the image and the prototype. Analyzing the theological arguments of each party, I''ll explicate the theological meaning of the iconoclasm. On the other hand, we can discern the deep influence of the Neoplatonic aesthetics on the discussion of the relation between the image and the prototype. Especially, borrowing the "light" theory of Plotinus, the Iconophiles including John of Damascus maintained that the icon leads us to the spiritual realm as well as it eventually makes us similar to God himself. We can conclude that reassessment of the iconoclasm provides thinking materials on the future of the christian art in the modern information society. |
