본 논문은 한국사회의 기독교인들에게 기독교적 입헌주의를 하나의 대안적 정치노선으로 제시하려는 시도의 일환이다. 사제들에 의해 수행되어 온 친미개화반공노선을 대체하기 위해서는 종래의 정치사상의 연구에서 무시되고 있는 프로테스탄티즘과 입헌주의의 사상사적 연관을 추적하는 작업이 불가피하다. 서구의 정치사에서 종교개혁정신이 입헌주의와 연결되는 계기는 17세기 초반에 등장한 언약신학(covenant theology)이 청교도혁명의 정당화논리로 탈바꿈되는 과정 속에 발생했다. 기독교적 입헌주의는 ‘주권’의 개념에 집착하는 절대주의 정치이데올로기에 대한 일종의 안티테제였으며, 헌법을 중심으로 관용의 정신과 중용의 정치를 조화시키는 경건한 세속정부의 이념을 발전시켰다. 하지만 계몽적 과학주의의 강력한 영향력은 그것을 자유주의적인 방향으로 세속화시켰고, 그 논리적 연결고리는 자연권사상 및 사회계약론이었다. 20세기 후반까지 지속된 자유주의적 정치이데올로기의 득세는 결국 역사의 종말을 거론하는 단계에 이르렀으나, 바로 그 때문에 ‘초월’의 가치에 주목하는 기독교적 입헌주의의 중요성이 정치철학의 전면에 다시 떠오르게 되었다. 이를 주의 깊게 음미하면서 본 논문은 대한민국의 정치현장에서 헌법을 중요시하는 희생적 중보(仲保)의 정치의 가능성을 조심스럽게 타진하고 있다. |

This article is an effort to propose Christian Constitutionalism as an alternative political direction to the Korean Christians. It is inevitable to trace theoretical and historical relationship between Protestantism and Constitutionalism for preparing an alternative of the pro-US, pro-Modernization, anti-Communism political direction, which has been maintaining for the past 120 years. In the Western modern political history, the link between Protestantism and Constitutionalism happened in the 17th century when the Covenant Theology was reinterpreted for the justification of English Civil War. Christian Constitutionalism was an Anti-Thesis of the Absolutism which adhered at the concept of Sovereignty. In the atmosphere of the Reformation and the revival of Aristotle in political thought in the 17th century, it developed a kind of political theory for the Secular government that harmonized the spirit of Toleration and the politics of Golden Mean. However, the overwhelming influence of the Enlightenment Scientism secularized this innovation to the direction of Liberalism with the key concept, for instance, ''Natural Right'' and '' Social Contract''. Through discovering this veil of secularization, this article tries to secure the possibility of the Christian Constitutionalism in the political context of Korean society.
