본 논문은 르네상스-계몽주의 이후로 진행되어왔던 모더니즘의 특징들을 예술작품들을 통해서 살펴보고, 왜 그것이 오늘날 우리가 경험하는 삶의 파편화라고 하는 병리적인 현상을 가져왔는지를 고찰하는 것이다. 특별히 본고가 예술작품을 통해서 모더니즘의 특성들을 살펴보려고 하는 것은 현대예술이 걸어온 길이 모더니즘의 진행과정과 상관관계가 있기 때문이다. 이러한 고찰은 우리들에게 신으로부터의 자유라는 모더니즘의 기치가 치른 대가가 얼마나 값비싼 것인가를 보여줄 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 오늘날 소위 말하는 포스트모더니즘이 모더니즘을 대체하는 새로운 사상이 아니라 모더니즘이 붕괴되어가는 과정에서 나타나는 하나의 병리적인 현상이라는 점도 밝혀질 것이다.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the characteristics of Modernism, by studying works of Modern Art and why it has led to the pathological phenomenon of fragmentation that we experience today. The reason why this article specially aims to study the characteristics of Modernism by examining works of Modern Art is because the development of Modern Art is closely interrelated to that of Modernism. This article, under the premise that works of art and the world-view are interrelated, selects art from after the Renaissance in order to examine the philosophical characteristics of Modernism. This study will reveal what great a price was paid for Modernism’s standard of ‘Independence from God’. Moreover, it will be discussed that today’s so called Post-modernism is not a new ism that is replacing Modernism but the fragmentation of modernism that occurs with the collapse of Modernism. It will also be discussed that behind the of accelerating deconstruction in the 21st Century remains the modernist aims to reconstruct the Tower of Babel and achieve independence from God. |
