한국 사회가 외래 종교인 기독교를 받아들여 정착시키고자 할 때 진정한 기독교의 뿌리를 내리게 하는 것은 불가능한가? 황순원은 장편소설 󰡔움직이는 성(城)󰡕을 통해 이러한 질문에 대해 성찰하며 작가 나름대로 이에 대답하고 있다. 불교가 샤머니즘과 교섭하는 가운데 샤머니즘화하였듯이, 이 땅에 유입된 기독교도 샤머니즘과의 습합(習合)으로부터 벗어날 수 없었다. 그러한 종교 혼합은 진정한 의미의 정신적 정착의 결여, 다시 말해 한국인 특유의 ''유랑민 근성''에 기인한다. 황순원은 샤머니즘과 유랑민의식을 극복하고 참된 기독교인으로 살아가는 방안을 이웃 사랑을 실천하는 삶에서 찾았다. |

Is it impossible for Korean society to settle down the authentic Christianity? Hwang Sun-Won, the writer of The Moving Castle, reflects on this question and answers in his own way. Just as Buddhism was intermixed with shamanism, Korean Christianity could not escape the intermixture with shamanism. That syncretism results from a Korean nomad nature, a lack of real spiritual settlement. Hwang Sun-Won discovered, in the practice of neighborly love(agape), the device to overcome shamanism as well as nomad nature, and to lead an authentic Christian life.
