It is not surprising that economic matters are prominent in the teaching of the Bible and the social ethics of the Christian Church. Turning to the Bible, we find a fundamental ambivalence regarding wealth. In some contexts, especially in the Old Testament, money or wealth is portrayed very positively. The picture of money or wealth changes slightly in the New Testament which emphasized the negative side of the possession of wealth. The biblical teaching on money or wealth is thus two-fold : wealth is a gift from God, a sing of His blessing. But it is not to be a god in itself. It is critically important for Christians to have right attitude toward wealth. Jesus condemned the idolatrous attitude of treating money and wealth as a deity(Mammon) (L.k. 16:13). Bible constantly reminds us that money is God`s creation and is not to take God`s role of ruler of our lives, that the possession of wealth too easily tempts us to a devotion for the things of this world, and away from Christ and His Kingdom. In the later part of this article the writer examined brifly the attitude and appreciation on the material wealth historically from the early church to the economic thought of calvin with special attention to their endeavor to avoid spiritual dangers in the possession of wealth. The Bible is not ascetic, poverty is not inherently virtuous, nor is wealth sinful. It warned constantly about the dangers of wealth, instructing the rich to relieve the suffering of the poor through almsgiving. As John Stott suggested in his article entitled, "Poverty, wealth and simplicity", an alternative 1 proposal for Christians is to cultivate generosity, simplicity and contentment. Further, the possession of wealth comes with the obligation to care for the needy. |
