In this paper I surveyed the French Reformation in the first half of the sixteenth century when John Calvin played an important role. It can be divided into two phases. The first is the period for evangelization which was characterized by the diffusion of the ideas of reformers such as Lefèvres and Luther. Some experiments for the Reformation were also attempted in a moderate and progressive way, but, they ended in failure, because of the systematical suppression of the royal authority following "L'Affaire de placard". The second phase can be called the period of Calvinization which was characterized by a radical movement for the Reformation. This period was dominated by the theology of separation which was willing to separate completely the French protestants from the Roman Church. It resulted in the establishment of the French Reformed Church with a specific internal and external structure. |
