영문 초록 | History of Chollabuk province over last 100 years was that of 'modernization', more precisely speaking, that of 'western modernization', just as other regions were like in Korea. Western educational system, medical system, and western media and popular culture were introduced into this region of Chollabuk province in early 20 century. Now we are saying that we are living in accordance with the western style of everyday life. The life of modern Koreans, however, cannot be accurately and precisely explicated only by the things from the west. "The western" and "the ours" coexist throughout the last 100 years' history, in highly hybrid forms. This paper put the primary focus upon the "hybrid structure of everyday life", that canclini(1991) has ever mentioned in his argument upon "Hybrid Culture". Further, this paper investigates the field of power relations between two contested cultures: the west and the east, in conjunction with the inception of western christianity, and its power relations with confucianism and shamanism; and also in conjunction with the inception of the western, and the power relations among the people at various level. This research highly relied upon the oral, narrated history of the existing local ordinary people caught through the research method of ethnographic observation, as well as some existing historical documents. The ethnographic observation and interview researches originally aiming at a television historical documentary have been conducted mainly in two regions: first, Pyongchon village of Wanju near Jeonju, where a strong confucian tradition still remains; and second, Wi-do of Buan, where a tradition of shamanism still exists. This anthropological explication based on ethnographic observation reveals that the cultures are contested, but in the long run coexisting, rather than they come to the stage of the survival of the fittest. The codes of the conteted cultures' coexistence are largely seen in hybrid structure of the pre-modern and the modern. |
